Junk, Part 2.

Okay. In my last post I showed you some junk I had deliberately picked up on my last “thrift store run”– planning to revamp.

Today`s post will show you the results. Mmm, I had so much fun. I hope you have fun too, when I show you, and we can share in the fun together.

Skill level: Anyone can do it.

I guess that is one of two reasons I wanted to do this, is just to show you how easy it is. And it takes no skill what.so.ever.

It takes only a zeal and a desire to do it. I have to roll my eyes whenever someone acts like it`s a skill you acquire, it`s really not.

Honestly? It`s mostly in this secret weapon right here.

Once you hold within your hand, this can of spray paint primer ($4) – you become Captain Awesome.

You can do anything. Anything.

See, if you would try to spray paint say like, that gold little birdcage with out this primer, all your paint would roll off, and not stick and you would want to say some very bad words.

Like say- “Oh,  no!” and, “Arrgh!” ;)

Once you coat with this– btw, I use it on wood, metals, plastic- any other paint pretty much sticks to any surface. And you can find it at Walmart and anywhere after.

So, yup, that`s pretty much all you need to know. Easy peasy.

I said I did this for 2 reasons. The second reason I will tell you at the end of the post.

_____________________________________________

Can we just give 3 cheers for white paint! I cannot say it enough– paint covers a multitude of sins. Can we say fresh beginnings…

________________________________________

Here I will show before and afters and talk a little about each one.

This looked hopeless. This was my favorite of these re-dos.

All I did was spray with primer, spray again with regular white spray paint, then carefully painted the circle part with chalkboard paint. Three coats of that, I think.

Welcome to the early 2000s, Mrs. 1960!!

Mmm, sorry, but I kinda love her.

__________________________________________

Here`s my 2nd favorite of the re-dos.

See, this brown box WAS SO BORING that the only shot “before” that I have is with it in the background.

Talk about a wall flower!

Happy sigh.

This yellow adhesive paper was found the same day I bought all this junk. It`s a pretty large roll for $1. I thought it was cool, but laid it down twice in the store– just because I couldn`t picture in my mind where I would use it.

It was so fun to use it with this box once I started working on it. I lined the box because it was a boring, hideous brown inside.

Details of painting are: Primed, applied 3 coats with a brush and then adhered a stickers from Cavellini and Co.  (shown below).

______________________________________________

Hmm, yes. Gag me now.

Yup, nothing more then primed and spray painted.

She was a fun one too. Super easy.

Having fun with her on the coffee table. :)

___________________________________________

Ah, yes, the Box of Bore.

Taking “vanilla” to a new level– the index box.

Now she is pretty and ready to be seen; instead of hiding in shame all these years.

Seriously, I bet this is the first time anyone has looked at her in the past 50 years and actually SAW her.

Here she is hanging with her new friends.

______________________________________________

The Madonna figurine.

The reason I picked her up, is that I am seeing that solid color figurines are so in.

As long as there is a defined shape ANYTHING can be painted a solid color and look trendy and “new” all over again.

It was really, really hard to capture on pictures how she looks different than before.

I thought of painting her another color other than white, just so she would stand out better. But no, she was made to be white. I love how she doesn`t look so ceramic anymore– her cheesy gloss is gone.

She did not turn out perfectly. As you can see her forehead and neck dried kinda ripply.

That`s the beauty of it– now she looks imperfect, which makes her special.

I love how since she is painted she looks more like a peasant girl, than a Madonna. I think she would look really cool sitting on a lovely dresser holding necklaces around her neck. (As a place to store them)

Pretty and practical.

__________________________________

The only “before” shot I had of the little frames.

Gold and old. Old, being the reason I gave them a chance.

Fun to do.

________________________________________________

Had to take a picture of the birdie and the bowl, even though they were too pretty to re-do…

When I was looking in my files for all the previously shown pictures, I came across this re-do that I thought I would throw in here too.

Since I know birds are cool. I grabbed this at a Goodwill the other week. But ugh- the frame! It`s wooden, orange tinted stain did nothing for me, but make me think of the 80s.

I really wanted the bird picture but didn`t really want to pay $2.50 just for a print. You know how it is if someone gives you something free, but it`s so gross you don`t even want it near your person? That`s how this frame made me feel.

Since the lady said, “No, they are a set”

(I understand)

I decided to show her some love.

The frame, not the lady.

Like I said, paint really covers a multitude of sins. Goodbye 1980s!

_______________________

Now. You know how I said earlier that there were two reasons for doing this?

Well, I have been so, (there are no words) touched? at your kind words since I have been back. I have just the sweetest readers ever. I have been so wishing I could something fun and nice for ya`ll. To kinda “give back”.

Something fun– like a give-away.

I don`t really have much cash though and was just thinking and thinking what my give-away could be. And I decided to do, well THIS for my giveaway. Give you the stuff I have shown.

I am kinda putting myself out there because the voices in my head are telling me, “They are rolling their eyes at you, no one wants your junk”.

But I decided to anyways. If it`s not your style- you can always give it as a gift if you win. Plus, if only 2 people enter my giveaway, then you have a %50 chance of winning!

The giveaway will START this WEDNESDAY. Check back then, for more details.

I think what I will do, is separate the items into lots, and do 1 giveaway a week, until all items are gone– and then whoever wins can pick a lot.

It`s gonna be fun. Won`t you join us?

My SSS (Super Simple Savers) today is from ME:

Unoriginal I know, but I am out of entries from ya`ll. Please be kind and send me more.

Please send them to Ilovegk@gmail.com and put “SAVERS” in your subject line. thx!

Here it is:

If you have a 2 year old that suffers from uncontrollable urges to write on walls and yet begs for markers and paper to “write ABCs”– (how can you refuse such an educational idea?) make then sit in a high chair like this if they want to write. It`s the only way she can have markers and then she is very contained.

I know, I know it`s a lame SSS, but it`s the best I could do.

Send me something better.

Lolla says,

“Goodbye ya`ll. Come on back when you can stay longer!”

The One Where I Bought Junk.

You want to know something I have always wanted to do?

As an experimental kind of thing? Well, here it is, my friends…

Walk into a thrift store, and pick out “cool junk”– random items that I think I can see potential in.

And then, well– revamp. JUST to see if I could do it.

You know how you always see something kinda cool and think, “What if”…?

Well, on Wed. I had to be at a meeting, so with my girl`s already dressed, I decided to stop at the local thrift before heading home.

Yes, I admit feeling kinda foolish spending $$ on all these (ugly?) trinkets. But I DEF found things I think I can work with.

I will now show you my cast of characters. HERE GOES NOTHING.

First off- the two little gold and old little frames (above). Don`t miss them, that was the only picture I got of them. The group shot.

Then,

A GOLD, GILDED birdcage.

Well, there is almost nothing more “in” right now than birds, and birdCAGES, so… I put her in my cart.

I go to this thrift store (in my town) pry once, every other week.

The last 4 times I was there– I saw this mirror from the 60s.

That means she has been  hanging out there for about 2 months now– not feelin` any love.

She was a big “what iff-er”- every time I saw her.

This little box was so boring looking I almost didn`t even see it. It was just hanging out on the bottom shelf– proudly wearing his .25 name tag.

Another boring brown box. Rounded in shape and looking at me with potential.

And a ceramic Madonna bust. The mother of Jesus, not the singer.

A little glass birdie. Can you find it in this picture??

And I also found that day a gorgeous, lace capelet for my dressmakers form… Which I love and won`t change a thing with.

Birdie again.

A stunning bowl. Very Anthropologie-ish, I thought.

Perfect for displaying chocolates, wine corks  or vintage postcards in, something nice.

I won`t change a thing with this lovely either.

And this pretty embroidered table doily. She is very delicate and thin.

Ok, well, there– you have met them all.

My “finds” shown here cost me around $8.

Some of them need a MAJOR MAKEOVER, some are lovely as is.

Stay tuned.

The Children I Call “Ours”.

I have been so busy lately- I thought it would be fun to snap some pictures of my girls.

You  know, before they start telling me who`s boss and asking for money.

Oh, wait- the one already does that.

In my brief history of being a writer on a blog…

…my hus has always told me that my traffic slows considerably the days I post pictures of my kids.

Yawn.

(That was you guys)

I guess it took me years to figure out I wasn`t the only person who was proud of her children. And yes, I know my old posts like this, with 50 pictures of baby Elle with her head tilted 5 degrees differently on each picture can sure be BOR-ING!

Hey, I am learning.

All that said.

I didn`t go through swollen ankles, going under the knife, and taking Vicadin home with me– for nothing.

(I am a C-section girl)

Plus, this is my space.

SO HERE… is my shout-out!

I love my Elle-belly and my Laila-consuala.

(Nicknames).

Oh, really- you thought ‘Belly’ was Elle`s real middle name?

Well then, I can`t help you.

Here I said, “Can mommy, PLEASE take a picture of you?”

And she is really saying, “I am looking at you, mommy”.

As she looks at the floor, with her arms folded.

That is so Elle. There is no better way to describe her.

Deliberate, opinionated…

Wait, where does she get that?

I mean WHO ELSE in this family is opin…ion…ated… ?

If you know us, you are laughing now.

Well, it might not make you laugh– but you`ll know the answer.

(A. is G)

Here I said, “Please get up on the couch with Laila, so mommy can take a nice picture of you two.”

Elle did try. But she was holding an eraser (why?)  and as she climbed past Laila, she bumped her in the face with it.

Now Laila is crying.

And Elle is saying,

“I really sorry, baby”. Over and over.

But it`s over for Laila.

And now she sees her Giver Of Life.

(Me)

Really. What kind of mother keeps taking pictures when her baby is crying?

WHAT KIND I ASK YOU!

Yes. Right. I need to put my camera down, and go gather up my screaming baby.

Plus, I hear small children in the cereal cupboard, and the sound of chips in mouth.

Later. Love, Jenny

Todays`s SSS (Super Simple Saver) is from Christine!!

Thanks a mill!

“This is a sanity saver…. sometimes when my children are fighting and I am too upset to deal with it, I give myself a timeout on the basement steps. A little prayer and some time to cool-down and I’m ready to be the mom again. They are usually quietly waiting  to see what the verdict will be”.
And-
“Here’s an electricity saver……run your washer or dishwasher at night time when electric is cheaper. Never quite sure how much this saves or if it does at all, but it’s worth a try. i like to think that at least somethings working while I sleep”.

Little Black Buffet Revisited.

I wrote about the “history” of this bookshelf turned–

Whatever-it-is-now, HERE.

[In case you want to see her in her ugly beginning...]

Since I kinda have all the parties over with, that I had planned for awhile…

I decided to play with The Little Black Buffet again.

Now the buffet is a book nook corner.

And there is Domino. Ah, the Recession put her out of business.

As well as Cookie, another of my favorite mags.

I grab both when I see them at Goodwills.

Because I imagine that they will be valuable some day. And because I miss them so much.

They both had such an eclectic charm to them.

A clean white tablecloth.

This little cafe table belongs outside. But I`m enjoying her ever since I brought her in. She was way too sweet to freeze her skinny little iron legs in the snow, I thought.

The little basket has a glued chalkboard onto it. Because I am a chalkboard-monger.

The poster on the wall and the labels on the plants are all from Amazon. They just came in the mail last week. Here is a link for some great posters I found!

And no, I don`t get paid to recommend. I just love to share the love.

Amazon. Let`s just say I had a b-day gift card from the loving hus. I think he intended for me to buy books. I love books– but I was in the mood to buy house stuff.

So I did.

Well, now it`s my “reading area”.

The books in the basket, are 3 that I `m going to recommend.

Some of you said, “winter is getting long”. I thought a good book might be nice. :)

Here they are:

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. By: Patrick Lencioni

From the cover- it looks like a men`s book. It actually IS a recommend from my husband. We were at Barnes and Noble before Christmas and he had his nose just  STUCK in THIS book he had randomly picked up. I made him happy by finally saying that I`ll meet up with him later.

When I came back to the bookstore, I sat in a chair far away, but facing him, and watched. He was UTTERLY ENGROSSED. I`m not even sure he ever saw me until I walked up to him.

That is how intently he reads.

Such a honeymoon we are living. Still.

Anyways- I read it too, later. It`s a very short book. If you like conversations between people (what else), and figuring out cool things about the way we relate to each other. You will love this book! Great for leaders of teams, families, classrooms etc.

In my mind I still mull over what I have learned…

The second one is: The Red Tent. by: Anita Diamont

It has been years since I was recommended this book by my friend, Terri. For some odd reason, I have read it over and over.

It is a fictional account of the Biblical story of Dinah, written from a non- Christian perspective.

I LOVED how this author made the Biblical characters seem REAL and ALIVE. I loved her descriptive writing. Wow, it`s just such a colorful story…

If you live nearby, you can have my copy. I just picked it up at a Goodwill and had to take it home, even though I already own this book.

And the last one is:

Safely Home. By: Randy Alcorn

I know a lot of you have already read it, because it is a popular book…

But– Well written! Tears in a moving way, not a sappy way! Life changing!

I love Randy Alcorn. He has a HEART from GOD, and he also happens to be a “good writer”– I despise poor writing from Christian authors.

A great place to “go vintage”,

pick up a book,

relax,

put on some soothing music from Pandora Radio,

(Micheal Buble is a great relaxing, vintage-y musical choice. That was a recommend from my hus as well.)

drink hot tea,

and enjoy the rest of winter. It`s slipping away.

That is, if I were to ever take up drinking tea.

I should, because it seems so refined…

The SSS (Super Simple Saver)  for today…

is from…

SANNY YODER (who is my friend) :)

Love the idea and keep `em coming!

“Ok, I don’t know if you consider this a “saver” or not, but I think it is the coolest trick ever.

After you’ve diced onions or garlic and you’re worried that your hands will carry the odor for the next day, rub your hands on your stainless steel faucet.  It’s the weirdest thing ever, but your hands will be odor-free!”

You`ve Got Mail.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Something dropped through the slot in my front door.

And landed on my floor.

Why am I so excited?

Well.

This came in the mail.

Lovely!?

You can`t think of a better word than that?

How about–

beautous, bewitching, gorgeous, delightful, captivating,

delicate, delicious, delightful,

alluring, adorable, fair,

lovesome, knockout, pleasing, scrumptious,

dainty, comely, exquisite. …

That`s better.

I love me my Anthropologie wishbook!

[I said "wishbook" because catalouge, catouloge, catalogg is a word I cannot spell.]

Catalog. There it is!

Would I love to LOOK like what, while I serve you all THAT?

Well, yes I would!

Check. out. that. buffet.

A ghost is not turning the page.

That`s why it`s so helpful to have children.

Two year olds make great page turners.

No, Laila doesn`t wear fancy sweaters to bop around the house.

Grimy jammies or sticky pants usually.

Elle Laments.

“Mom, we`ll never have a life like this!”

I told her something very wise,

“In heaven we will”.

No, we didn`t say that.

Plus, I`ve heard that heaven is out of our comprehension.

incomprehensible

!

A bedroom fit for a very artsy, and classy little family.

That`s not us.

We have a layer of dust on our headboards and dresser right now.

And the sheets are always bunched up from two small lassies that love to climb in and slumber too.

[I thought "lassies" more Anthro-ish than "girls".]

But I don`t think it really works there either.

I guess my mind just goes to a certain legendary, heroic dog.

Moving on…

Is it okay to say that a CATALOG of pretty things made her-

generally happy , sometimes hectic, and yes, also humdrum

life,

a lot

more

lovely today?

(THANK YOU, Michelle!)

Awesome idea.

“Super Simple Saver: When cooking double the recipe and stick half of it in the freezer for later. I do this with spaghetti, lasagna, chicken tetrazzini, tator tot casserole, refrigerator mash potatoes, chili soup. It comes in very handy when you know you’re going to have a busy day!”

and a Post Script:

I need more SSSs from YOU.

For info click HERE.

Happy Monday.

1. My guest room, where I put all the junk that I love that doesn`t go anywhere else.

2. We have lived in our new/old house for 3.5 months now- and my favorite thing about it is the open windows in the living room where I can just GAZE out at the drifting snow, the stately town courthouse, and whoever is walking over to the lawyer`s office beside us. It soothes my soul every morning when I walk into the room. Btw- I`m not here to say this is a great lighting shot or anything. :)

3. “HOUSE / HOME”. I adore gluing little chalkboards to old silver found at thrift stores. Tarnished silver cleans up in seconds with a wet rag and Barkeeper`s Friend. Why people get rid of tarnished silver- well, I can`t wrap my brain around that. Anyways- they make great plant markers. We live in town and I want to put a raised bed in our back yard this spring. I`ll have to make more of these, I think they would look nice as row markers.

4. My chalkboard table- that I am sure ya`ll have seen before. The perfect addition to the playroom. Another fun thing to do– that can be seen here– is super glue pretty & cool plates to candle sticks. F-u-n. Nice place to display nice chocolates, or vintage postcards.

5. I had to “snap” this little birdie- because it`s another of the little (stinky perfume) AVON bottles I wrote about 2 posts ago. I LOVE little birdies and this one got spray painted and is quite darling in this jar, I think. She was quite ugly, but I don`t have a “before” pic.

6. Laila & I.

7. This is a plain old jar, leftover Reindeer moss and a “G” Christmas ornament. I bought the moss and ornament at Pottery Barn when we were there before Christmas. Two little (cheaper) reminders of G and my fun day in the city.

8. I got these darling little Gap shoes for Elle at a thrift store. I had washed them before I wore them on her and they were drying on the radiator so prettily, I had to include them. :)

9. Another play room picture. That`s Elle there. She thought it was very cool to put her little Strawberry Shortcake doll on the plate when I took a picture of it. I love her. :)

10. More upscale-ish places love to sell these clear, little votives– but Walmart makes them too (for a lotta less dollars) and I just LOVE to stick them all over plain, or embellish them with labels and twine.

11. A poster I ordered from Amazon. I tacked it onto a $3 thrift corkboard covered in burlap. I kinda like it– but haven`t hung it because something isn`t right yet. I think maybe the burlap should be white linen or something to keep the lines of the room soothing and fluid. I`m not really sure?? And ideas?

By now you are probably asking yourself why I do this waste my time making little collages and then typing about “pretty things”.

Well, this blog is my therapy. I come here when I`m bored or want to feel inspired. I ADORE following creative bloggers and feel so refreshed after looking at other lady`s gifts and expressions of beauty.

I think out loud on here and just kinda spit out what I`m rolling around in my pea sized brain at the time. I don`t think my neighbors care when I glue or measure, but I guess you do. Well, you`re here anyways… hahaha So yeah- I love the conversations, even if I don`t get 100% of my comments answered- I love to hear what you think and I love when you leave ideas or tell me what you`re working on.

Plus. God created this earth and when He did, He went all out. He didn`t paint the world in black and white. I`m pretty sure He got great pleasure from making the reds and the golds and all the lovely textures. For me, beauty is Worship. Worshipping the Creator of Beauty- He thought of it first.

[And He is 'pretty good' at that whole- turning trash to treasure thing too].

But that`s just me. :)

I AM A FAN.

So worth your time to check it out.

Thank you, Karli @ Rocky Bella! :)

Freezer Paper Fun.

Ever since I was WOWED by the cool ideas at MADE, that can be done with freezer paper- I have wanted to get into doing it.

Well, I got into it alright- AND NOW I CAN`T STOP.

Easier than it looks- the possibilities are endless.

Step 1- Figure out what you want your wording and font to be.

Step 2- Either print it out- or if it`s something that won`t print well (or you want to save a tree) you can trace it right from your screen.

Items needed:

Stylus

Iron

Freezer Paper

Pencil/ Paper

Fabric ink

Sponge brush

Cutting mat

(For best tutorial go HERE.)

Iron on freezer paper.

Apply paint.

Just a warning- peeling off the paper to reveal the creation is SO FUN.

I used burlap to make this one. I used cotton on the back, and lined it underneath, because burlap is scratchy and see through.

I think burlap is so pretty though…

Inspiring related links and pictures:

Rustic Wall Organizer-so cool!

Banker Box Storage, Set of 3- also so cool!

______________________________________________

Here`s the second pillow I made. This very blah bench needed a friend.

It still needs another friend, called paint, but that will have to wait.

I love the simplicity of it.

The fabric for this pillow- is a beautiful soft, thick cotton. It is re-purposed fabric from a window treatment that was left here at our old/new house. The batting is all from thrift stores. You can get the ugliest pillows in the world wash them, bleach them and …cut them open.

Thrift store pillows are usually .50. Pillow forms new (Walmart, Joanns) are $3-6.

Up close, does not have to be perfect, that`s the beauty of it.

I made this with the left over letters from the rest pillow. Not sure yet what I will make it into.

Like I said, the possibilities are so endless. And it doesn`t have to stop with fonts. You could do sillouettes, shapes, pictures.

Varied paint colors would be fun too.

And also, pillows is just a start- I want (someday) to do a book bag, tablecloth, dishtowel, table runner, kid`s shirts, kid`s pants, window panel with wording.

I think it`s time for me to think of something else the rest of the day.

If you try this out- I`d love to see your pics. Include your link in the comments so we all can enjoy!!

Love these ideas!

“Slice whole mushrooms with an egg slicer for uniform slices. I love to cook with fresh mushrooms.  I prefer to buy the whole ones, they seem to stay fresh longer in my refrigerator”.

“Hide the occasional grey hair with mascara that matches your hair color. How do you spell grey/gray? Ah”.

And to answer your question, both spellings of gray/grey are correct. :)
